7.3. Sustainable entrepreneurship in Flemish SMEs
By Cathy Lecocq (UGent), Thomas Standaert (UGent), and Petra Andries (UGent)
This section provides an overview of sustainable entrepreneurship among Flemish SMEs, based on a survey conducted with a random sample of 1,614 companies, that is representative of the SME population in Flanders in terms of size categories and sectors.
Sustainable entrepreneurship is a way of doing business in which, in addition to economic goals, ecological and social goals are also given attention.
Chapter 7.3.1 presents ecologically sustainable behavior among Flemish SMEs over the past 12 months. Ecologically sustainable behavior refers to sustainable activities undertaken by companies to preserve or improve the environment.
Chapter 7.3.2 presents socially sustainable behavior among Flemish SMEs over the past 12 months. Socially sustainable behavior refers to sustainable activities undertaken by companies to create benefits for certain social groups or individuals.
For the 1,534 SMEs that have engaged in sustainable practices over the past 12 months, we further explore how these activities were implemented.
Chapter 7.3.3 shows the expenditures on sustainable activities by Flemish SMEs that engaged in sustainable behavior over the past 12 months.
Chapter 7.3.4 shows the professionalization of sustainable practices among Flemish SMEs that engaged in sustainable behavior over the past 12 months.
